7 Martha Lenora Haley, Letters written by Martha "Mattie" L. (Haley) Cahoon (Between 1930 and 1931, St. Johnsbury, Vermont, USA), Oct 1931. On 17 OCT 1931 Martha had written that she was taking her husband back to Buzzard's Bay, MA, in hopes that his failing health would improve there.

1930 Vermont Census. While first glance might suggest that Martha was exercising Vanity,
Woman's Perogative, Forgetfulness, or Discretion.... regarding her Census ages.... the truth
may be simple... Census Takers Rounding offs... which does fit the 1900 and 1920 Census
figures below.... or perhaps Martha told them she was born in 1875, instead of 1873. What ever
the case, the ages sited on these census are incorrect, for not only Martha but for Alphonse, as well.
Earliest known Census for Martha is the 1880, MA Census, as daughter to William Haley, her father, wherein her age is most truly reflected, at age 6, as the Census may have preceeded her birthday. There after the discrepancies become more acute...
ref. Census 1900 cites 25, but is actually 27;
ref. Census 1920 cites 45, but actually 47;
ref. Census 1930 cites 53 but she is actually 57.
Age inconsistency also follows Alphonso. First found by name in that same Census year, 1880, in Wareham, Plymouth, MA, United States of America:
Alphonse Cahoon, other, single, male, w, 22, born in MA, works on farm, both parents born in MA. (Residing in the William Savery, Farmer, Household). This would place Alphonse as being born in 1858... which maybe everyone rounded to 1860 for easier Math, which may also be true for Martha.
ref. Census 1900 cites 1868 as his birth year and yet aged 40... if born 1858, he would be 42.
ref. Census 1920 cites age 60, but actually 62;
ref. Census 1930 cites age 67, but he is actually 72.
Point in fact, in letters written by Martha in 1930 and 1931, she does mention that her husband's health is failing and he has reached 70 already.
Therefore, I do believe he was born closer to (May per 1900 census) .... year 1858.
Martha's birth month of June was correct in 1900 census; Perhaps Alphonse's was as well, thereby born in month of May.
Martha's birthyear, 1873, plus age at marriage of 17 yrs. (per 1930 census) would place their year of marriage at about 1890, when Alphonse was actually 32... but with his birth year rounded to 1860, it would reflect age 30, as shown in the 1930 census.
Photocopy of their son, Louis A.'s birth in 1892, does show their ages, but does suggest that if any siblings preceeded him, as still born or otherwise, would be minimized to one, if occurred within the span of marriage.

relay a tale of his childhood. In reference to his paternal Great Grandfather he referred to
him as "Fon" which is what he said he was known by, to family and friends. 17

According to Letters written in 1930 and 1931, by Ruth's mother, Martha:
Alphonse F. and Martha Cahoon had purchased farm property in Victory Hill, where their son, Louis and his second wife, Jessie Y. (Stewart) resided with Louis Jr., Edward, (sons of Mary M.M. Stewart, Louis' first wife) and either his son James, but more likely his nephew Edgar Jr., and two of his four daughters, Jessie Louise and Elizabeth Ann, known respectively as "Weecie" and "Betty Ann", (daughters of Louis and Jessie) where as youngest daughter, Mary Jane was not yet born, in 1931.
Martha does mention in her letters that her daughter and son-in-law, a "steam shovel operator" was living with them because a new road was going through Vermont and her son-in-law would be working on that project.
While not mentioned in Martha's letters, Louis' eldest daughter, named after his sister, Ruth, and his youngest son, James, did for the most part reside with their mother, Mary M.M. (Stewart) Cahoon after he left his family, to marry her younger sister, Jessie. Louis's daughter, Ruth, was drowned in MA, the year of this 1933 publication, while rescuing her yournger brother, James, so it is probable that those two children did remain with thier mother, Mary.
Photo copies are available of this directory listing; also photo copies available of letters written by Martha Lenora (Haley) Cahoon, written in 1931. It is probable that when Martha and Alphonse returned to Cape Cod, in MA, the Pennix family may have stayed on at the Danville Rd. residence because Pennix had been hired to work on a new road that was being installed in Vermont at that time. I may have actually driven on the road that he helped to first pave!
. On 17 OCT 1931 Martha had written that she was taking her husband back to Buzzard's Bay, MA, in hopes that his failing health would improve there.
