Hi List......A few weeks ago I requested the words of this Glasgow Street song - so here it is in all its glory:-
Kiltie, kiltie cuald bum three stairs up.
The wumman in the middle door hit me way a cup.
Ma nose is aw bleedin and ma face is aw cut.
Kiltie, kiltie cauld bum three stairs up.
[ The verse is also similar to another Street song - "Murder, Murder, Polis" ].
It was sung to the same tune as "Wee, Willie Winkie" !
For those of us who have never heard this Nursery Rhyme by William Miller [1810 -1872], here it is in part:-
Wee Willie Winkie.
Rins through the town,
Upstairs and downstairs
in his nicht-gown,
Tirling at the window,
Crying at the lock,
'Are all the weans in their bed,
For its now ten o'clock?'
[ Tirling means to rattle]
The Version Familiar to Americans is:
Wee Willie Winkie,
Runs through the town,
Upstairs and Downstairs,
In his nightgown.
Knocking at the windows,
Prying at the locks.
Are the children in their beds?
It's past eight O'clock.
Hey! Willie Winkie,
Are you coming then?
The cat's singing pussie,
To the sleeping hen.
The dog's lying on the floor,
And does not even peep.
But here's a wakeful laddie,
That will not fall asleep
Wearied is the Mother.
That has a restless wan.
A wee, stumpy, bairnie,
Heard whenever he's seen.
That has a battle aye with sleep,
Before he'll close an eye,
But a kiss from off his rosy lips.
Gives strength anew to I.
William Miller was born in George Street, Glasgow.
There is a memorial to him in the City's Central Necropolis, but he is buried in the old Kirkyard, located at the corner of Tollcross Road and Corbett Street, Tollcross.
The church was the Tollcross Central Church, and I have been advised that it was destroyed by fire in recent times.
