Once

Once I sat in the tree
Or fan the fields of green,
Not afraid of falling to my knees,
And feeling like a queen.
Once I sat by the ocean,
Feeling the salt spray
And the sun shining on my face,
Never thinking of another day.
Once I climbed the mountains,
Seeing the beauty all around me,
Feeling the peace of nature,
Not knowing what was to be.
Once I felt love,
Knowing it was good.
My heart was soft back then,
Now it feels like wood.
Once I felt the stirrings,
Of a tiny little life,
Making unknown joy,
In my world of strife.
Once I knew the wonders,
Of becoming your wife,
Not knowing that years later,
I would destroy your life.
Once I felt the fear,
Of my child’s life
Coming to an end
And the total change in life.
Once I had my heart torn,
Completely from my body,
Made my life a parody;
Made me want a toddy.
Once I was happy;
I knew life was good.
Now I sit on my butt
And unhappily brood.
Now life is almost unbearable,
Always I am sad.
Can life ever be
Anything but bad?
